  • Atomizing the fuel. A healthy injector sprays a fine, even mist that burns cleanly. A clogged or worn tip dribbles or throws a lopsided pattern, and fuel that doesn't atomize doesn't fully burn.
  • Metering the exact amount. The computer trims fuel delivery in real time. An injector that flows too little (clogged) or too much (stuck) throws that math off and forces the engine to compensate.
  • Nailing the timing. Injection is synced to the engine's cycle. An injector that's slow to open or close disrupts that timing, which shows up as a stumble or a misfire.
  • Sealing when closed. A leaking injector lets fuel seep in when it shouldn't — fouling plugs, washing the oil film off the cylinder walls, and flooding a cold start.

There are two broad kinds of injection you'll hear about. Many engines are port-injected — the injector sprays into the intake port, just ahead of the valve. Most newer engines, including a lot of the European cars we see, are direct-injected (often badged GDI, TFSI, or TSI), spraying fuel straight into the cylinder at very high pressure. The symptoms of a failing fuel injector

Here's the catch with a failing injector: almost none of its symptoms point only at the injector. Every one of them can also come from a coil, a plug, a sensor, or a vacuum leak. That's exactly why guessing gets expensive. But when several of these show up together, injectors climb the suspect list fast.

Rough idle or a shake at stops

At idle the engine is running on the smallest, most delicate fuel amounts of the whole drive — so a weak or uneven injector shows up here first. If the car shudders, dips, or feels like it might stall while you're stopped at a light on Elm Street, then smooths out once you're moving and the healthy cylinders mask it, a lazy injector is a prime suspect.

Dirty, stuck, or dead: what's actually wrong

Direct-injection engines — common on modern Audi, VW, and BMW, and plenty of newer domestic cars — add a wrinkle.
